CNN —A man set himself on fire outside the Israeli Embassy in Washington, DC, on Sunday, according to a statement from the Washington Metropolitan Police Department. The adult male was transported by DC Fire and EMS to a local hospital and remains in critical condition, MPD said. By the time firefighters were dispatched to the scene, the fire had already been extinguished by US Secret Service, according to Vito Maggiolo, a public information officer from DC Fire. MPD is working with the Secret Service and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to investigate the incident. CNN —A former Trump administration official who was shot in a deadly string of carjackings in Washington, DC, earlier last week died Saturday, the DC Metropolitan Police Department said in a statement. Michael Gill, 56, was inside his vehicle parked at Mount Vernon Square on Monday when the suspect, identified as 28-year-old Artell Cunningham, got inside the vehicle and shot him, police said. Cunningham shot Vasquez dead and fled the scene in his vehicle before officials say he conducted two more carjacking incidents in Prince George’s County the following morning, MPD Executive Assistant Chief Jeffery Carroll said at a Tuesday news conference. Cunningham was eventually stopped and was fatally shot by two New Carrollton police officers in Maryland on Tuesday. CNN —A man with numerous firearms and materials to make an explosive was arrested Thursday in former President Barack Obama’s Washington, DC, neighborhood after claiming on an internet livestream that he had a detonator, law enforcement officials told CNN. Taylor Taranto, who had an open warrant for his arrest related to the January 6, 2021, US Capitol attack, was arrested by the Metropolitan Police Department and federal law enforcement. “There is no active threat to the community and this incident remains under investigation.”According to law enforcement officials, firearms and materials to make Molotov cocktails were found in Taranto’s car. There is currently no indication of a direct threat to the Obamas, law enforcement officials told CNN.
